"Durante i lunghi
intervalli tra una realizzazione di un disco e l'altra, spendevo moltissimo tempo in
studio di registrazione, quando incontravo un fan per strada, mi chiedevano spesso,
"Cosa ci fate la dentro?" Regolarmente giravo la domanda a me stesso.
Quello che facevamo la dentro
era produrre un sacco di musica, un sacco di musica che avrei potuto utilizzare in ogni
momento. Il risultato è che i miei album sono frutto di una serie di scelte -- cosa
inserire, cosa tralasciare? Basavo le mie decisioni sul punto di vista creativo del
momento -- il soggetto che cercavo di mettere a fuoco, qualcosa di musicale o emotivo che
cercavo di esprimere. In ceri casi, come in Darkness on the Edge of Town, Nebraska e The
Ghost of Tom Joad, queste scelte hanno cristallizzato l'album che stavo realizzando. In
alcuni altri dischi le ragioni che avevo per scegliere una canzone piuttosto che un'altra,
col senno di poi, sono state meno significative. Il risultato di un lavoro come questo è
che un sacco di canzoni, comprese alcune che preferisco, sono rimaste inedite.
Questa collezione contiene
tutto, dalle prime strofe che ho cantato negli studi di registrazione della Columbia, ai
miei primi e i successivi lavori con la E Street Band, fino alla mia musica degli anni 90.
E' una direzione alternativa rispetto a quelle che avevo preso con i miei dischi, un
invito nello studio dove abbiamo passato molte notti alla ricerca del disco da proporvi.
Mi fa piacere, finalmente, essere in grado di condividere questa musica; qui ci sono
canzoni che erano state dimenticate."
